Actually, there totally is! This study was done in 2008 (called 'Evidence for sugar addiction: Behavioral and neurochemical effects of intermittent, excessive sugar intake' by Nicole M. Avena, Pedro Rada and Bartley G. Hoebel) and definitely shows some evidence of sugar dependence in rats. I know it's an animal study, but this isn't a new idea. I might be more invested in the idea because I've experienced it first hand. That's not to say we don't need carbohydrates, but in concentrated amounts, abundant and unseasonable amounts we can't ignore them.

I think Dr. Oz is a fat-shaming quack but that doesn't mean it's a black and white issue, either... there's also new thought about how sugar intake can affect the hormone leptin and other energy-balance regulating hormones, as an explanation for modern chronic diseases. I find these ideas compelling because they list obesity as just one of the many side effects of chronic health diseases, and not the cause. It also severly undermines the 'thermodynamics' argument which has been brandished against fat people from the very beginning, claiming fat accumulation is the direct result of gluttony and slothfulness. I'd recommend Taubes', 'Good Calories, Bad Calories' for anyone who's interested.

In unseasonable amounts we can't ignore their possible ill-effects, I mean.*
